Pima Medical Institute - East Valley

Pima Medical Institute is a small, private school with an emphasis on health care technology and a desire to help underserved populations. Its associate degree and diploma programs can get people started on a career in veterinary medicine, but its bachelor of science in veterinary medicine (BScVM) program is where Pima's research and study of the care of animals is concentrated.

Pima's BScVM program requires students to complete two years of core veterinary science courses and a third year of clinical rotations. These courses give students the knowledge they need to care for animals, with subjects ranging from animal anatomy and physiology to animal medicine and surgery. Additionally, students gain hands-on experience in the form of clinical rotations, which give them the ability to apply their knowledge to care for animals in a veterinary setting.

After finishing their clinical rotations, students can take the American Registry of Veterinary Medicine's national examination. If they pass, they'll receive the designation of veterinarian, allowing them to care for animals across the country. Additionally, Pima students have the option to take the Arizona state examination, which gives them the ability to care for animals in the state.

A part of the Hesperian Health Systems, PMI operates out of the Pima Medical Center, which is one of the largest medical centers in the state.

Alternatively, students can apply to the Veterinary Technology program directly and receive a full associate degree in veterinary technology.

In either case, students will gain the knowledge and skills they need to begin a career as an animal care technician. Through the program, students will learn about animal anatomy, animal health, medications and treatment, laboratory procedures, animal surgery, and more. Additionally, students gain hands-on experience through the program's animal hospital practicum and community service projects.

Through the program, students also have the opportunity to work with some of the most well-known animal care organizations in the area. These include the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association, the Phoenix Zoo, and the Salt River horses.

Pima Community College

For students looking to enter the veterinary field through a two-year associate degree, Pima Community College has an excellent program in place.

At Pima, aspiring veterinarians can take two classes to get a feel for the subject, then dive into a full two-year program that includes all the core classes and a host of electives.

The college also has a unique arrangement with Central Arizona College, through which students can earn a bachelors degree in animal science at the University of Arizona, Tucson, after completing the Pima associate degree and additional courses.

Through either arrangement, Pima students can take classes in subjects such as animal anatomy and physiology, animal nutrition, and animal care and management. These classes, along with others such as animal health and disease, provide a strong foundation for a future career as a veterinarian.

Along with the classes, Pima's animal science program also features a working farm, complete with a variety of livestock and farm animals for students to care for. The farm gives students hands-on experience working with a full array of animals, just as they would in a real veterinary practice.

Carrington College - Phoenix

Located in Phoenix, Arizona, Carrington College is a for-profit school that prepares students for careers in the animal care field. The school offers a two-year associate's degree in animal science that can be earned either online or on campus.

Through this program, students will learn about topics such as animal anatomy and physiology, animal nutrition and health, and animal production. Additionally, students will complete hands-on training at an animal facility, where they'll gain experience working with animals directly.

Carrington College requires all prospective students to complete an online application, which is then reviewed by a member of the admissions team. Students will also need to complete three letters of recommendation and transcripts of all previous academic work.

Carrington College - Mesa

Carrington College is a small, private college with campuses nationwide that offers degrees in a variety of fields through its associate degree, career, and post-baccalaureate certificate programs.

One of those associate degree programs is in veterinary technician, through which students can gain the knowledge and skills necessary to work in a veterinary practice.

Through the 70-credit program, students gain foundational knowledge in animal anatomy, physiology, medicine, and surgery, as well as the skills necessary to perform basic medical care, diagnostic testing, and laboratory procedures.

Students also get hands-on experience working with animals in a veterinary practice through a clinical rotation that takes place in the last six months of their studies.
